Category : Antitubercular Agent.
Composition : Each film coated
tablet contains
1. Prothionamide BP 250 mg.
Pharmacology : Prothionamide
is a thioamide derivative considered interchangeable
with ethionamide. It inhibits mycolic acid synthesis,
and is effective only against mycobacteria. However,
it is active against all the species including
M. kansasii, M. tuberculosis, M. leprae and some
strains of M.avium.
Indications : Chemotherapy of
all kinds of tuberculosis.
Prothionamide is not recommended to be used as
a single agent, against tuberculosis but should
be a part of multidrug regime.
Dosage : Adults
- 0.5 to 1g daily in 2 to 3 divided doses along
with other antitubercular drugs. Daily dose not
to exceed 1G. Children
- 15mg to 20mg / kg in two divided doses. Daily
dose not to exceed 0.5 G.
Adverse Effects : Anorexia, nausea,
vomiting, dysuria, arthralgia, and myalgia. Elevation
of plasma uric acid may lead to acute episodes
of gout.
Contraindications : Hypersensitivity
to Prothionamide and impaired liver function.
Presentation : Blister pack
of 5 X 10 tablets , 10 x 10 tablets and bulk pack
of 1000 & 2500 tablets
Storage : Store at a temperature
upto 25oC.Protected from light.Keep
out of the reach of children
