Anaesthetic.
Composition: Each ml contains -
1. Benoxinate Hydrochloride USP 4.0 mg (Oxybuprocaine)
Pharmacology : Benoxinate is an effective
surface anaesthetic, which acts by blocking sensory
nerve endings near the site of application. The
solution produces no other conjunctival effects
and has no effect on the pupil. It has some bacteriostatic
action and reduces the risk of exposure keratitis.
Indications : For use in procedures such as
- Tonometry (measuring intra-ocular pressure)
- Evaluation of corneal abrasions
- Electroretinography
- Superficial foreign body and suture removal
- Minor surgery of conjunctiva
Dosage : 1 to 3 drops of 0.4 % solution depending
on the degree of anaesthesia required. Onset of
action is 6 to 20 seconds and duration of effect
is 15 minutes.
Directions For Use : Avoid touching or rubbing
the eyes until the anaesthetic effect has worn off
because touching or rubbing the eyes may damage
the anaesthetized cornea and conjunctiva. To avoid
contamination, do not touch the dropper tip to any
surface. Replace cap after use. Do not use if discoloured,
cloudy or if it contains any precipitate. Use the
solution within one month after opening the container.
Contraindications : Benoxinate should be used
with caution in patients with allergies, cardiac
diseases, and hyperthyroidism or open lesions.
Adverse Effects : Systemic toxicity is rarely
seen following ocular administration, however, adverse
effects may include allergic reactions and occasionally,
convulsions and hyper excitability.
Presentation : 5 ml plastic vial.
Storage : Store at room temperature, protected
from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of the reach
of children.
