Cephalosporin
Composition : Each vial contains
1. Cefotaxime sodium BP equivalent to Cefotaxime
500 mg.
2. Cefotaxime sodium BP equivalent to Cefotaxime
1.0 G.
Pharmacology :
Like other cephalosporins, it acts by inhibiting
bacterial cell wall synthesis and is bactericidal.
Cefotaxime is a member of the third generation
and has good bactericidal action against Staphylococci,
Haemophilus infuenzae, Salmonella, Shigella, Serratia,
Citrobacter, Neisseria and Proteus. It is also
active against a number of anaerobic organisms.
Cefotaxime is metabolised in the body to desacetylcefotaxime,
which also is biologically active. The parent
antibiotic and its metabolite have synergistic
action.
Indications :
- Upper and lower respiratory tract infections
- Skin and skin structure infections
- CNS infections e.g. Meningitis and ventriculitis
- Endocarditis
- Gynaecological infections including Pelvic
Inflammatory Diseases.
- Bacteraemia / Septicaemia
- Intra-abdominal infections including peritonitis
- Bone and joint infections
- Perioperative prophylaxis, more specifically
in colo-rectal and gynaecological surgery.
Dose : Adults
1 – 2 G IM or IV every 12 hours. Maximum
daily dose not to exceed 12 G.
Gonorrhoea - 0.5 to 1G stat dose.
Children/Neonates: 50 mg / kg body weight in 2
divided doses.
Adverse Effects : Adverse effects
are rare and include skin rash, anaphylaxis, nausea,
vomiting, diarrhoea and leucopenia.
Contraindications : Hypersensitivity
to cephalosporins or penicillins.

Storage : Store at a temperature
upto 25oC, protected from light. Keep
out of the reach of children |
