Composition : Each tablet contains
1. Captopril USP 25mg
2. Captopril USP 50mg
Pharmacology :
Captopril is a specific competitive inhibitor
of the Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE). This
enzyme converts angiotensin I to angiotensin II
and also inactivates bradykinin. Its beneficial
effects in hypertension and heart failure appear
to result primarily from suppression of the angiotensin
activation, causing a break in the renin angiotensin
system.
Indications : Used
in the treatment of :
- Essential arterial hypertension
- Renal hypertension
- Congestive heart failure
- Left ventricular dysfunction after Myocardial
Infarction
- Diabetic nephropathy
- Management of renal crisis in scleroderma
Dosage : Adults-25
mg thrice a day, increased gradually up to 100
mg thrice a day. Start with a lower dose in patients
with CHF or in patients on diuretics, to avoid
marked fall in BP with first dose. Increase gradually
to 25 to 50 mg tid. Usual dose is 50 to 100 mg
tid and maximum daily dose is 450 mg.
Children : 0.15 mg / kg/24 hours
in three to four divided doses.
Contraindications : It is contraindicated
in aortic stenosis, renal dysfunction, and hypersensitivity
to any ACE inhibitor, pregnancy.
Adverse Effects : Neutropenia
may occur in the first three months of therapy.
Other adverse effects include skin rash, headache,
nausea, hypertension and proteinuria.
Presentation : Blister pack of
2 x 10 tablets and 4 x 10 tablets , and 5000 tablets
(in bulk presentation).
Storage : Store at a temperature
upto 25oC. Keep out of the reach of
children.
